Every child must learn the basics of world geography before reaching high school.  For many kids, this may be quite an unpopular subject.  Thanks to many of the sites on the Internet, studying school subjects has never been more fun.   In fact, your youngsters may have so much fun playing these online geography games, you may have trouble pulling them away from the computer.

Learning each state in the USA can be absolutely fun on The Kidz Page Map-Game.  In the left pane is a topographical map of the United States.  On the right, a series of dark green shapes fall (one at a time) while making a roaring plane sound.   Once it stops, the player drags it to its appropriate place on the map.  The state name is given as it falls and a timer keeps score of their progress.

Sheppard Software offers great geography games for children.  With three categories: capitals, states, and landscapes, there is the beginner level, intermediate, and advanced player levels.  For example, Landscape, outlines regions of North America and the player chooses the one being referred to, on the right.  On the left is a lengthy description of the area giving clues to its whereabouts.  After a few incorrect guesses the correct region blinks in yellow.

These sites offer children much more than online geography games.  All offer a variety of games and activities for grade school students.  The Kidz Page hosts coloring pictures and puzzles of all sorts including jigsaw puzzles.  Sheppard Software offers mainly games, quizzes, and pictures for children.  Kids Geography provides mostly geography, geology, and weather information in text and games.  All three combined offer youngsters more free learning resources than they’re likely to use.

Some sites offer an even greater selection of games not mentioned above.  Kids will truly love them and adults can benefit from some of them as well.  So if it has been years since you last studied geography and would like to refresh your knowledge, please check out these sites.  These games will not take long to play and just might entertain you too.
