The Raisin Poem

Raisins are a very small but healthy snack to eat

They’re tiny, round, black, and chewable and sweet

They were discovered in1873 during a hot freak spell

As grapes then withered on the vines, no one could foretell

But once the grapes have shriveled up, it was understood

Instead of grapes going sour, they tasted rather good

In 1876 Scottish William Thompson found what it takes

The best raisins were to come from Thompson seedless grapes

It takes four pounds of grapes to produce only one pound

Raisins from Malaga, Spain are the best raisins around

When producing today’s raisins, California takes the lead

They grow the best raisin supply to meet our nation’s needs

One and one-half tablespoons of raisins has forty calories

Their high sugar content is a great source of energy

Not all grapes make good raisins, just keep this in mind

Raisins are only produced by the dark and seedless kind

They contain fatty acids like Omega-6 and Omega-3

Potassium, magnesium, and Vitamins K and C

They also serve as a great source of carbohydrates

With their nutritional value, they’ll make you feel great

You’ll find them in breakfast cereals or in raisin bread

You can add them to rice pudding or eat them whole instead

Raisins can get caught in teeth because they are so chewy

At least they go down easily, because they are not gooey

Instead of eating candy, eat raisins-they’re nutritious

And most of all you will agree that raisins are delicious
